Description
This listing is for an authentic Rusyn folk costume skirt from northern Spiš region north of Stará Ľubovňa near the Polish border. Similar red skirts called "kanafaska" (after the fabric they're made from) were worn in many Rusyn villages in this area including Jarabina, Litmanova, Kamienka, and Veľký Lipník (as well as by Lemkos across the border in Poland). The front of the skirt is intentionally made of a simpler fabric as it would have been covered by an apron. Our ancestors didn't waste their best fabrics in areas where they wouldn't be visible! I have matching vests from both Kamienka and Jarabina. I am selling a collection of Rusyn and Slovak folk dress from villages in Spis, Saris, and Transcarpathia, Ukraine so please get in touch if you need anything in particular. A note regarding condition: All of the costumes and textiles that I sell are vintage and have typically seen decades of use resulting in expected wear and tear that add to the history and authenticity of each piece. In case of above average wear, I try to list any significant damages and heavy signs of use in the above description. Depending on the age, materials, and condition, I will often hand-wash more durable, colorfast cotton and linen elements, but embellished garments, heavier wool pieces or items made from silk or fine fabrics are sold in the original, unwashed condition. Small holes or stains, missing sequins/beads, worn trim, and other marks related to standard wear are common and do not detract from the value of most pieces. Please keep in mind that a vintage textile or garment in very good condition might still show signs of use, storage and age. Unless otherwise noted, all of the items listed for sale are in very good, stable condition and are suitable for use, wear or display. I am more than happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have, so please ask questions to allow me to offer you the best service possible.
