    Description

Girl's or Slim Woman's Embroidered Apron and Open Skirt from Piestany, Slovakia
This magnificently embroidered apron and matching open skirt come from villages around the famed spa town of Piestany in Slovakia. Part of the local folk costume, it's made of tightly-pleated black cotton, richly embroidered with white cotton floral motifs, and trimmed with white bobbin lace. The open skirt has the embroidery and lace across the bottom, while the apron has them across the bottom and up both sides.
The skirt is worn in back, with the open area in front, covered by the apron. As both skirt and apron have waistband measurements of 17 inches, and the apron should overlap the skirt at the edges to provide enough coverage of the body, this would fit a 30-inch or smaller waist.
As you can see from the measurements, each piece has about 9 feet of fabric that was beautifully embroidered and then carefully pleated its full vertical length. A tremendous amount of work went into making this lovely set.
Measurements of both Apron and Skirt:
    Width at waistband: 17 inches
Width at bottom hem: 108 inches
    Length:28 inches
In excellent condition, no stains, rips, or holes.
A splendid skirt and apron from a highly prized folk costume region!
